Dental Hygiene & Exams
Friendly hygienists provide thorough, gentle cleanings and comprehensive exams that catch small problems before they become big ones. Whether it's been six months or six years, you're always welcome here.
What Is a Dental Cleaning and Why Does It Matter?
Even the most diligent brushers and flossers miss spots. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar that your toothbrush simply can’t remove. A professional dental cleaning removes that buildup, polishes your teeth, and gives your gums a fresh start.
Regular cleanings do more than keep your smile bright. Research consistently links oral health to overall health, including heart health and diabetes management. So think of your regular cleaning as an investment in whole-body wellness!
What to Expect During Your Visit
Your appointment typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Here’s what happens step by step:
- Digital X-rays: We use low-radiation digital imaging to check for cavities, bone loss, and other issues that are invisible to the naked eye. We diagnose the frequency of radiographs based on your individual risk factors, with most adults recommended every 12 months.
- Professional cleaning: Our hygienist gently removes plaque and tartar, then polishes your teeth to a smooth finish.
- Comprehensive exam: Your dentist evaluates your teeth, gums, bite, and oral tissues. We also perform an oral cancer screening at every visit.
- Personalized guidance: We review brushing and flossing techniques tailored to your mouth, and discuss any areas that need extra attention.
If we spot anything that needs follow-up, whether it’s a small cavity or early signs of gum disease, we’ll walk you through your options clearly and without pressure.
Who Needs Regular Dental Cleanings?
Everyone. The American Dental Association recommends professional cleanings every 6 months. You may benefit from more frequent visits if you:
- Have a history of gum disease or periodontal concerns.
- Are managing diabetes, heart disease, or other systemic conditions.
- Wear dental restorations such as crowns, bridges, braces, or implants.
- Smoke or use tobacco products.
- Have physical dexterity limitations, such as arthritis or Parkinson’s.
- Are pregnant (hormonal changes increase gum sensitivity).
And if you’ve been putting off your cleaning because of a busy schedule or dental anxiety, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Our team specializes in making nervous patients feel at ease.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I get a dental cleaning?
Most patients benefit from cleanings every six months. If you have gum disease or other risk factors, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits. We will create a schedule that fits your specific oral health needs.
Does a dental cleaning hurt?
For most patients, a cleaning is completely comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, let your hygienist know and we can adjust our approach.
What if I haven’t been to the dentist in years?
We welcome you without judgment. Many of our patients come to us after a long gap, and our team is experienced at helping you get back on track with a gentle, no-pressure approach. We promise we are here to help.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Yes. Our digital X-rays use up to 80% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. The amount of exposure is extremely small and well within safe limits established by the ADA — so much so, that wearing lead aprons for digital dental radiography is no longer needed!
How long does a cleaning appointment take?
Plan for approximately 45 to 60 minutes. If it’s been a while since your last visit or if you need a deeper cleaning, it may take slightly longer. We will let you know ahead of time if it will be a longer visit.
